The 40th Reinforcement was one of the last units to leave New Zealand. They did not arrive in time to participate in active service and were therefore only entitled to receive the British War Medal 1914-19.
Sickness Outbreak en route to UK
Private Earl travelled to England aboard the ss Tahiti. From the "List of Casualties - NZEF" it would appear that a total of 16 men (1 Sgt, 1 Corporal and 14 privates) Died of Disease during the voyage to the UK from New Zealand.
